Capt Bob Pardo as pilot and 1Lt Steve Wayne flew this McDonnell Douglas F-4C Phantom II on their 10 March 1967 mission to the Thai Nguyen Steel Mill 35 miles northeast of Hanoi North Vietnam. This was the first US Air Force air strike and the North Vietnamese were waiting for the strike force. Damaged and leaking fuel, Capt Pardo pushed Captain Earl Aman and 1Lt Bob Houghton for 88 miles were both crews ejected from their stricken fighter jets over Laos. All four aircrew members were picked up by rescue helicopters. This event became known as “Pardo’s Push”.
