Steve Ritchie and Chuck DeBellvue F-4D Vietnam MiG Killer

This is a famous MACAIR F-4 Phantom II! This F-4D now on display at the US Air Force Academy has the distinction of shooting down six North Vietnamese Air Force MiG-21 fighters during the 1972 air campaign. F-4D 463 had six MiG-21 FISHBED kills on 1 March 72, 16 April 72, 8 May 72, 10 May 72, 28 August 72, and 15 Oct 72. One big reason is this aircraft contained the highly classified at the time APX-80 COMBAT TREE IFF interrogation system in the radar which identified any MiG aircraft squawking a North Vietnamese IFF code… crews knew it was a MiG! This gave the aircrew an ability to shoot beyond visual range with AIM-7 Sparrow radar guided missiles. An interview with retired Colonel Chuck DeBellevue on the Lessons from the Cockpit podcast explains how the COMBAT TREE system was such a huge advantage found on YouTube at https://youtu.be/EM5r-b_ELJ8?si=xAxGIqd-_BVxiBW_
