Description
Douglas A-1E was flown by Major Bernie Fisher on 10 March 1966 when he landed his Skyraider on a Special Operations Group runway under attack from 2000 Viet Cong to pick up his wingman Major Dafford “Jump” Meyers. Major Fisher was able to rescue Major Meyers by throwing him in the cockpit and taking off before the Viet Cong could stop him. For this action, Major Bernie Fisher was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor by President Lyndon B Johnson, the first US Air Force service member to be awarded the MOH for operations during the Vietnam War.
