McDonnell Douglas F-4G Advanced Wild Weasel 90th Tac Fighter Squadron

This F-4G Advanced Wild Weasel was assigned to the 90th Tac Fighter Squadron the “Pair-o-Dice”, 3rd Tac Fighter Wing at Clark Air Base The Philippines. The F-4G was the ultimate Surface-to-Air Missile or SAM slayer after all of the lessons learned for suppression of enemy air defenses or SEAD role was created to deal with the North Vietnamese SA-2 GUIDELINE SAMs and built into the F-4G airframe. The F-4Gs were modified from the F-4E Phantom II and this F-4G, tail number 0291 short down and North Vietnamese MiG-21 FISHBED near Hanoi on 19 August 1972. In July 1977 the 90th upgraded its aircraft to the F-4G, which performed a ground radar suppression and destruction mission. The squadron had both F-4G and F-4E aircraft assigned, operating in “hunter-killer” roles. Each F-4G was paired with an F-4E during each mission, and the G models would point out threat radar sites to the E models for attack, as well as attacking using their own armaments. The APR-48 radar warning and homing system and the AGM-88 High Speed Anti-Radiation Missile or HARM was devastating to the Iraqi air defense network during the 1991 Desert Storm air campaign.

During Operation Desert Storm, several 90th Pair-o-Dice squadron sent several pilot and Electronic Warfare Officer or EWO crews to Sheik Isa Air Base in Bahrain to plus up the 561st Tac Fighter Squadron from George Air Force Base and 81st Tac Fighter Squadron Spangdalhem Air Base Germany aircrews. After Desert Storm all F-4G Wild Weasel airframes stationed at Clark Air Base returned to the United States and George Air Force Base before consolidating all Weasel assets in the 561st at Nellis Air Force Base near Las Vegas Nevada. This aircraft left Clark and The Philippines for it’s new home as a Gate Guard at Osan Air Base South Korea where it resides today.
