McDonnell Douglas F-4G Advanced Wild Weasel was one of the most sophisticated Surface to Air Missile or SAM hunting aircraft ever made. The combination of the APR-38 Radar Homing and Warning System (RHAWS) and the Textron AGM-88 High Speed Anti-Radiation Missile (HARM) devastated Saddam Hussein’s Integrated Air Defense System (IADS) nicknamed KARI which is Iraq spelled backwards in French!
This F-4G Wild Weasel, tail number 69-0263, was once an F-4E during the Vietnam War and went through the Hill Air Force Base Depot and was given the Weasel retrofit with the APR-38 and ARN-101 digital modular avionics System (DMAS) navigation system. Tail 0263 was the highest “SAM Slayer” of Desert Storm launching 42 HARM’s at 42 radar targets and destroyed every one of them. Assigned to the 561st Tactical Fighter Squadron of the 35th Tactical Fighter Wing at George Air Force base near Victorville California, the pilot of 0263 was Major Bob Middleton and the Electronic Warfare Officer or EWO is Captain John “BEAR” Farrell. This aircraft is now on display at the National Museum of the US Air Force at Wright Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton Ohio.
